FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Speck Gear products stand out?

Speck Gear products are handcrafted in Switzerland. 99% of the materials used are sourced from Europe. All products are reduced to their essential functions, manufactured to the highest quality standards, and made from materials that can withstand even the most demanding use. Their design is simple and timeless.

How sustainable are Speck Gear products?

For us, sustainability primarily means high-quality, durable products that will be faithful companions for years to come. From raw materials to the finished product, we strive for the shortest possible supply chains. If necessary, our products can be easily repaired anywhere in the world. For example, our bags are sewn, not taped or welded. The outer fabric is a custom-made product for Speck Gear. The Sensil® ByNature yarn we use is made from renewable resources, specifically biomass-balanced adipic acid. This is obtained through the fermentation of organic waste (e.g., food waste). The polyamide consists of 96% renewable resources. This reduces the use of fossil resources and carbon emissions. All our products are PFAS-free and are delivered with only the absolutely necessary packaging made from recycled paper.

Are Speck Gear bikepacking bags waterproof?

Our outer fabric is 100% waterproof thanks to its PU coating. The seams are also waterproof, even though they are not glued. This is achieved through a combination of impregnated sewing thread, an optimally chosen needle size, and stitch length. This makes the seam sufficiently tight, eliminating the need for additional seam sealing or taping. These latter methods often create weak points, especially with frequent compression. The roll-top closure is also waterproof thanks to its triple-folding design. However, these bags are not suitable for underwater use.

How is high quality ensured for the end consumer?

Short distances and complete manufacturing in Switzerland are what set Speck Gear products apart. We know our suppliers personally and maintain constant communication with them. This is essential for consistent product quality – for both parties. We use materials with a high proportion of renewable resources that are free of harmful PFAS. The quality of the raw materials and the production conditions are our most important criteria when selecting products. We would never use an inferior recycled product of dubious origin simply because it's currently fashionable. All our materials and prototypes undergo rigorous real-world testing before being launched.

How should I clean my Speck Gear bikepacking bags?

The best way to wash your bags is the same way you wash your bike! A sponge, a hose, and some soapy water are all you need. Since our bags aren't machine washable, you shouldn't throw them in the washing machine with your jerseys and cycling shorts, no matter how tempting it might be.

Are the bikepacking bags available in different colors?

We have the outer fabric produced in Germany according to our specifications. To make this possible, however, we need to produce at least 300 linear meters of fabric. As a young and small company, we have to manage our resources carefully. We first need to process this quantity of textile before we can produce a new color. Of course, it would be great if sales eventually grew large enough for us to offer a variety of colors.

How do you attach the Speck Gear mini panniers?

Thanks to our ingenious tensioning system, the Mini Panniers sit securely on the rack. Even when riding on rough terrain, they won't wobble, rattle, or jump out of the mount. The roll-top closure is designed to also compress the bag. The closure and mounting system function perfectly even in cold temperatures and can be easily operated with gloves: simply hook the Mini Pannier onto the rack from bottom to top and tighten the strap. To release, simply lift the ladder buckle on the back, pull the bag upwards by the handle, and unhook it.

Can the mini panniers also be attached to standard racks?

Our Mini Panniers are compatible with most standard racks with a tube diameter of 10–12 mm and a suitable attachment point for the hook. They function at a clamping height of 24.5–36 cm. They are not compatible with the Ortlieb Quick-Rack.

What makes Speck Gear racks stand out?

The racks are handcrafted by a small bicycle manufacturer in Zürich from seamless, precision-drawn steel tubing. High-stress contact points and screw connections are made of chrome steel, and the surface is finished with a durable powder coating.

For legal reasons, they are designed for a maximum load of 26 and 20 kg respectively. The V-Rack has an opening for internal cable routing of the rear light. The Y-Rack can be used as both a front and rear rack and is height-adjustable.

Can Speck Gear racks be mounted on all bicycles?

Both the V-Rack and the Y-Rack are designed to be compatible with most bicycle frames and forks that have the necessary mounting points. Your frame should have rack eyelets on the dropouts and upper seat stays. Our racks are designed to fit frames and forks with dropout widths from 150 to 180 mm (5.9–7.1"). If your frame doesn't have threaded eyelets on the seat stays, you can use a seatpost clamp with integrated rack mounts or the Tubus clamp adapter set. To mount the Y-Rack to a fork, it must have threaded rack mounts near the dropouts and a central fork crown bore. All Tubus/Racktime accessories are also compatible with Speck Gear racks. Your local bike shop will be happy to assist you with installation.
